DVD Screensaver

The bouncing DVD logo, drifting corner to corner and changing colour on every bounce. There is a counter for corner hits, because that is the only reason anyone watches this.

Press F for fullscreen, Esc to exit.

What the dvd screensaver is

A DVD player left idle showed a logo bouncing around the screen, changing colour each time it touched an edge. Occasionally it landed exactly in a corner. That moment became a small internet ritual, and it is the entire appeal of this screensaver.

The odds are worse than people assume. A corner hit needs the logo to reach a horizontal and a vertical edge on the same frame, which depends on the starting position and the ratio between the screen and the logo — on some geometries it happens every few minutes, and on others it will not happen at all.

  • A "back in five minutes" screen for a stream or a shared monitor
  • Something harmless to leave on an idle display in an office
  • Settling an argument about how often the corner actually happens

Bouncing DVD logo online, no download

Everything runs in the page. There is no installer, no browser extension and nothing to allow — press the fullscreen button or the F key and it takes over the display.

The speed slider changes how fast the logo travels without changing the physics, so the corner-hit behaviour stays the same. Whatever you set is written into the address bar, so you can bookmark your preferred speed or send it to someone else.

How to run the dvd screensaver full screen

Press the fullscreen button on the player, or the F key. Escape brings you back to the page. On a desktop browser F11 does the same job and hides the browser’s own toolbars as well, which is what you want on a display that is going to be left running.

Everything you change in the settings is written into the address bar as you change it, so the version you have set up is a link. Bookmark it, or send it to whoever is running the screen. Space pauses and resumes at any time.

Questions

Does the DVD logo really hit the corner?

Yes, but how often depends entirely on the geometry. The logo travels at 45 degrees, so whether it ever reaches a corner exactly is decided by the ratio between the screen size and the logo size, and by where it started. On some window sizes it happens within minutes; on others you could watch all day.

Can I change the text on the logo?

Yes. The Text control swaps in a few alternatives, and the choice is kept in the URL so a customised version is a link you can share.

Will this stop my screen from sleeping?

No. A web page cannot override your operating system’s sleep timer. If you want it running for a long time, turn off sleep for that display in your system settings.

Is the dvd screensaver free?

Yes — free, with no account, no download, no watermark and no time limit. It is a web page, so it runs on anything with a modern browser.

How do I stop it or exit fullscreen?

Press Escape to leave fullscreen, or F to toggle it. Space pauses the animation without leaving the page. If you used F11 to hide the browser toolbars, press F11 to bring them back.
