How glitch text actually works
Unicode has combining marks — accents, cedillas, the whole apparatus of diacritics — that attach to the character before them rather than occupying their own space. Nothing stops you attaching thirty of them to one letter, and the result grows upward and downward out of the line.
That is all this is. The output is plain text using standard characters, which is why it survives copy and paste into places that would strip formatting. It is not an image and not a font.
- A username or display name that stands out
- A title or headline with a corrupted look
- Chat, where the point is that it spills over the lines
- Anywhere plain text is allowed but styling is not
The three directions
Above, through and below can be toggled independently. Above and below are what make text spill into neighbouring lines; through adds strikes and overlays that corrupt the letter itself without changing its height.
For a name that has to stay on one line, turn off above and below and keep only through. For maximum chaos, all three at high intensity — and expect it to overlap several lines in each direction.
Where it will and will not work
Some platforms strip combining marks, some clamp how far they can extend, and some reject names containing them outright. There is no way to predict which; try it and see.
Worth knowing: a screen reader announces every combining mark. Heavy glitch text is not just decorative to someone using one — it is a long stream of noise. That is a good reason to keep it to a name or a title rather than a sentence, and not to use it where somebody needs to actually read the content.
