Violet Screen

A light pinkish purple — brighter and softer than purple. This page fills the screen with #EE82EE — rgb(238, 130, 238), hsl(300, 76%, 72%) — and nothing else.

Press F for fullscreen, Esc to exit.

What a violet screen is used for

  • Soft, cool-warm ambient light
  • Backgrounds for photography where purple is too heavy
  • Gentle screen fill for video calls

Violet screen online: #EE82EE at full screen

CSS violet is #EE82EE — red and blue high with a substantial amount of green, which lightens it considerably. It is much closer to pink than the spectral violet at the far end of the visible range, which is a deep blue-purple that displays cannot really reproduce.

That gap is worth knowing about. True violet is a short-wavelength colour outside the sRGB gamut; what a screen shows you is an approximation mixed from red and blue. It is one of the few named colours where the screen version and the physical version are meaningfully different things.

As a light it is soft and flattering, sitting between pink and lavender in effect.

How to get a full screen violet background

Press the fullscreen button on the player above, or the F key. Escape returns you to the page. On a desktop browser F11 does the same job and hides the browser's own toolbars as well.

The colour box is a control, not a picture: use the hex field to enter any value, pick another shade from the palette, or download the current colour as a PNG at your screen's resolution. Whatever you set is written into the address bar, so the link you copy reproduces exactly what you are looking at.

Questions

Why is screen violet so much lighter than violet light?

Spectral violet is a short wavelength beyond what red, green and blue subpixels can mix. Displays approximate it with red and blue, which lands somewhere near pink. CSS violet (#EE82EE) is that approximation, not the physical colour.

Is this violet screen free?

Yes — free, with no account, no download, no watermark and no limit on how long you leave it open. It is a web page, so it runs on anything with a modern browser.

How do I exit fullscreen?

Press Escape, or F again. If you used F11 to hide the browser toolbars, press F11 to bring them back.
